Concrete in Southern Madison County

Colbert is a crossroads town in southern Madison County, about 12 miles northeast of Athens on Highway 72, and the work that comes to concrete contractors here is a mix of small in-town jobs and bigger rural slabs. The Georgia General Assembly first incorporated it in 1899 as the Town of Five Forks, and a 1909 act renamed it Colbert, after early settler James Fletcher Colbert. The old Colbert depot now serves as City Hall. The 2020 census counted 630 residents.

Between Athens, Comer and Danielsville

Colbert sits 5 miles southwest of Comer and 7 miles south of Danielsville, the county seat. Many people here commute to Athens but want room around the house, so lots are larger than in town and often include a shop, a carport or a barn. Each of those usually needs a slab. We pour floor slabs sized for the building and its load, with thickened edges where walls or posts bear.

Two creeks, one river

Within Colbert, Mill Shoal Creek flows south and tributaries of Brush Creek flow north, and both reach the South Fork of the Broad River. The town sits at about 768 feet. A lot that drains toward one of those creeks may carry a lot of water across it in a summer storm. We look at which way your yard drains before we lay out a driveway or patio, then pitch the slab and add a swale if the water needs a path.

Small homes, careful steps

Older houses in town often have modest stoops and narrow walks. When we replace a set of steps, we size risers and treads to code-friendly, comfortable dimensions, connect the steps to a sound footing, and make sure the top landing is deep enough to stand on while opening the door. These details matter more than size on a small house.

A slow-growing, steady town

Colbert has grown gradually for more than a century, from 141 residents in 1900 to 592 in 2010 and 630 in 2020. Many houses in town have been standing for decades, and their front walks and landings have seen a lot of foot traffic. A durable, well-drained walk with a non-slip broom finish holds up best.

Rural concrete we pour often

Around Colbert, the most common rural jobs are equipment pads, carport slabs, barn aisles and aprons where a gravel drive meets the pavement. Each one gets a base and thickness sized for what will drive or sit on it.

Can you pour a shop floor in Colbert?

Yes. We size the slab for the building and its load and add thickened edges where walls or posts bear.

How do you keep a patio from flooding in a storm?

We check which way the yard drains, pitch the slab away from the house, and add a swale or drain path if water needs somewhere to go.

Do I need a permit to connect my driveway to Highway 72?

A driveway onto a state route may need a state permit. We check what applies before we pour.
