Concrete in a Railroad Town

Crawford began as a railroad stop, and its compact layout shapes a lot of the work we do as concrete contractors here. The town was first called Lexington Depot, the point where the railroad reached the area, and the Georgia General Assembly incorporated it as the Town of Crawford in 1876. It was named for William H. Crawford, U.S. Secretary of War and Secretary of the Treasury. The 2020 census counted 821 residents. Crawford sits on U.S. 78, about 14 miles from Athens and 3 miles from Lexington.

A town built around a plaza

Church Street and Elm Street run as divided one-way streets that form Crawford's town plaza, the center of local cultural and commercial life. The intersection of U.S. 78 and North Avenue holds the only traffic light in Oglethorpe County. Homes near the center sit on older, tighter lots, while Smokey Road and Park Avenue lead out to more spread-out residential streets. Each setting calls for different concrete: careful walks and steps near the plaza, and longer driveways and larger slabs farther out.

City water and utilities

Crawford runs two water treatment plants, one near the western city limits off U.S. 78 and one off Waterworks Road on the eastern limit, and it supplies water to parts of the county and its schools. That means water lines are in the ground in many places. Before we dig footings or a driveway base, we have utilities located so we do not damage a line. It adds a short wait to the schedule and avoids a much bigger problem.

Rolling ground at 778 feet

Crawford sits at about 778 feet, and most lots have some slope. On sloped driveways we use a broom finish for traction and set a smooth transition where the drive meets the road. On patios, we pitch the slab away from the house and look at where gutters drain, because water dumped at the edge of a slab will undermine it.

Rail history and older lots

Passenger rail service on the Georgia Railroad through Crawford ended in 1984, but the town's layout still follows the old line. Lots near the tracks and the plaza tend to be smaller and closer to the street. Replacing a walk or a short drive there takes careful forming so the new concrete meets the house, the yard and the public edge at the right height.

Weather on pour day

We schedule early starts in summer and avoid pouring ahead of heavy rain, so the surface cures evenly.

Crawford Questions

Do you locate utilities before digging?

Yes. We have underground lines marked before we dig a base or footing, so we do not damage water, power or other lines.

Can you replace a walk near the town plaza?

Yes. We keep the width and finish in keeping with the older homes around the plaza and check with the city if the work reaches the public walk.

Is concrete a good choice for a sloped driveway?

Yes. A broom finish gives grip, and a well-shaped transition at the road keeps cars from scraping.
