Concrete for an Old County Seat

Lexington is one of the smallest places we serve and one of the oldest, and concrete contractors working here spend as much time on old homes as on new slabs. Founded in 1800, when the Oglethorpe County seat moved from Philomath, Lexington was incorporated as a town in 1806 and named after Lexington, Massachusetts. Its population peaked at 635 in 1900, and the 2020 census counted 203. It sits on U.S. 78, about 17 miles southeast of Athens.

Old houses on Main Street

Main Street runs past the courthouse, and many houses in town date back well over a century. On homes like these, the concrete is usually small but visible: a set of front steps, a walk to the street, a landing at a side door. We keep new work in proportion to the house, with walks that are not overly wide and steps that match the porch height and tread depth. Where old granite, brick or fieldstone remains, we work around it instead of replacing it.

Rural land around town

Most of the land around Lexington is open country, and many of the calls we get from the area are for farm and outbuilding work: equipment pads, barn aisles, slabs for metal buildings and long driveways from a county road to a house set far back. Those jobs need more base and thickness than a residential patio, and we size them for the actual loads.

Weather on the record

Lexington's climate normals show about 49.53 inches of precipitation a year and only about half an inch of snow, with a record high of 110 degrees and a record low of 6 degrees. The rain is the steady concern for concrete. We grade every slab so water runs off and away, and we compact the base so a wet season does not leave it soft. In hot weather, we pour early and cure carefully to keep the surface from drying too fast.

Planning a long rural pour

A large farm slab or a long driveway is usually poured in sections over one or more days. We plan the joints between pours so they line up with control joints, order concrete in loads sized for each section, and make sure trucks can reach every part of the pour without crossing soft ground. Good planning keeps the finish consistent from one end to the other.

At the crossroads of three highways

Lexington sits at about 702 feet where U.S. 78, Georgia 22 and Georgia 77 meet, with routes toward Athens, Washington, Comer, Elberton and Union Point. Shaking Rock Park is in town. If a driveway connects to one of the state routes, a state permit may be needed, and we check before we pour.

Lexington Questions

Can you replace steps on an older Lexington home?

Yes. We match the porch height, keep risers even and the treads deep enough, and leave any sound original stone or brick in place.

Do you pour farm and barn slabs around Lexington?

Yes. We size thickness, base and reinforcement for the equipment or animals the slab will carry.

Does a driveway onto U.S. 78 need a permit?

A driveway onto a state or federal route may need a state permit. We check before we pour.
