Concrete for Statham's Growing Neighborhoods
Statham is a small city that has grown steadily for four decades, and much of the concrete work we do as concrete contractors here involves homes from that growth. The population was 1,101 in 1980, 2,040 in 2000 and 2,813 in 2020, a 16.8 percent rise in the last decade alone. The 2020 census counted 1,051 housing units. Statham sits in eastern Barrow County, about 13 miles west of Athens, and was named for Charles Statham, a University of Georgia official.
Homes from the 1990s and 2000s
The biggest jumps in Statham's population came in the 1980s and between 1990 and 2010. Driveways and patios poured during those years have now been through two or three decades of Georgia weather. The common signs we see are cracked aprons where cars turn in, sections that have sunk near the garage door, and small back stoops that were never sized for real outdoor use. Often the best move is to replace the worn piece and add a proper patio at the same time.
Plan for the clay
Like much of the Georgia Piedmont, Statham lots usually have red clay a short way below the topsoil. Clay holds water and swells and shrinks as it wets and dries. A slab sitting on bare clay with no base is the classic recipe for cracks and settlement. We strip organic soil, put down compacted stone, and grade the slab so water runs off and away instead of soaking in at the edges.
At about 892 feet
Statham sits at roughly 892 feet. The ground is gently rolling, so most yards have some grade between the house and the back property line. A patio that is level to the eye still needs a slight pitch away from the house, usually around a quarter inch per foot. We set that pitch on the forms before pouring, and we check that it does not send runoff toward a neighbor.
Schedule around the weather
Georgia summers are hot and humid, and spring brings heavy thunderstorms. We watch the forecast closely before a Statham pour. In summer, we start early and keep the base damp so it does not pull water out of the fresh concrete. In spring, we avoid pouring right before heavy rain, which can mar the finish. If the weather turns, we reschedule rather than rush the job.
Close to schools and town
Statham Elementary on Broad Street and Bear Creek Middle on Jefferson Street both serve the town. Families near them often want wider walks for strollers and bikes, a parking pad for a second car, or a patio for gatherings. We can design those to fit the lot and any HOA rules.

Statham Questions
Should I replace my cracked driveway apron or the whole driveway?
If the cracks are limited to the apron and the rest of the drive is level and sound, replacing the apron alone can make sense. If panels are sinking across the drive, a full replacement is usually better.
How much slope does a patio need?
Usually about a quarter inch per foot away from the house. It is barely noticeable when you stand on it, but it keeps water off the slab and away from the foundation.
Can you add a parking pad next to my driveway?
Yes, as long as the lot and any HOA rules allow it. We tie it into the existing drive and match the finish.
