Concrete Work Across Monroe

Monroe is the seat of Walton County and the southernmost city on our regular route, about 25 miles from Athens along U.S. 78. As concrete contractors, we find Monroe has a little of everything: mill houses, older homes near the courthouse, and subdivisions that came with the city's steady growth. The city was founded in 1818, counted 11,407 residents in 2000 and 14,928 in 2020, and had 6,130 housing units at the last census. We pour driveways, patios, walks, steps and slabs, and we repair failed concrete.

The mill district

The Monroe and Walton Mills Historic District was listed on the National Register on December 28, 1983. It covers about 120 acres along South Broad Street, South Madison Avenue and the Georgia Railroad line, with 236 contributing buildings, including mill houses. The Monroe Cotton Mill was begun in 1895 with brick walls 16 inches thick, and the Walton Cotton Mill followed in 1900 and 1901. The mills no longer make cotton; Wikipedia notes they now hold antique markets, event space and shops.

Mill houses of that age usually have modest front stoops, short walks and narrow drives. Replacing them well means keeping them in scale. A huge slab in front of a small mill cottage looks wrong. We form steps with even risers, keep walks narrow enough to suit the house, and finish them so they sit quietly next to older brick.

Built on a cotton economy

Monroe was a major cotton producer in Georgia in the early 1900s, and many homes on the older blocks date from those decades. Concrete laid then is often thin, unreinforced and resting on little or no base. When it breaks, the fix is not a patch. We remove the old slab, rebuild the base with compacted stone, and pour new concrete at the right thickness for its use.

Newer Monroe

The east end of the city has grown around employers like Hitachi Automotive Systems, a Walmart distribution center and Leggett and Platt, and newer neighborhoods have followed. Homes there usually need patios, driveway extensions and walks to the back yard. We can tie new work into the existing slab, match the finish and check HOA guidelines before we start.

What to send us first

If you are in the mill district or near the courthouse, a photo of the front of the house and the walk or steps helps us plan a finish that suits the street. For newer homes, a photo of the existing driveway and patio and a rough measurement are enough to start. Either way, we follow up with a site visit to check grade, base and drainage before we give you a written estimate.

Elevation and drainage

Monroe sits at about 909 feet, in the center of Walton County. Grades are rolling, so drainage is always part of the plan. We pitch every surface, watch where downspouts empty, and avoid creating low spots where water will sit against a foundation.

Monroe Questions

Can you replace the front steps on a Monroe mill house?

Yes. We size the new steps to the door and porch, keep risers even, and finish the concrete so it suits the older house.

My old walk is thin and broken. Can it be patched?

Thin, unreinforced walks with no base usually do not hold a patch for long. We recommend removing the old slab and pouring new concrete on a compacted base.

Do you work in newer Monroe subdivisions?

Yes. We add patios, extend driveways and pour walks, and we work within your HOA rules.
