Concrete for Commerce Homes, Old and New
Commerce has a long industrial history, and concrete contractors here see a wide range of houses, from mill village homes more than a century old to new lots near the interstate. The city counted 7,387 residents and 3,002 housing units in 2020. It sits in northeastern Jackson County, about 19 miles north of Athens on U.S. 441. We pour and replace driveways, patios, walks, steps and slabs across town.
Mill village houses
Harmony Grove Mills was organized on April 3, 1893, to make cotton textiles, including denim overalls, and it produced the city's earliest electricity. The mill village built for its workers makes up a large part of the southeast end of Commerce. The mill closed in 2004, but the houses remain. Homes of that age often have small front stoops that have pulled away from the foundation, short walks broken by tree roots, and narrow drives laid long before modern base and reinforcement were standard. We remove what has failed, rebuild the base, and pour new work sized to the house.
On a drainage divide
Commerce sits on a drainage divide, at about 912 feet. Water on the southwest side of town heads toward Oconee River tributaries, and water on the northeast side heads toward the Savannah River. In practice, that means a lot of Commerce property sits on sloping ground. Water runs downhill quickly on concrete, so we set a pitch on every slab and make sure it sends runoff somewhere useful.
From Harmony Grove to Commerce
The community was a trading post called Harmony Grove in 1808, incorporated as a town in 1884, and was renamed Commerce in 1904 to reflect its cotton trade. The North Eastern Railroad line opened through town in 1876, and growth spread out along the tracks. Interstate 85 now runs through the north part of the city, with exits 147 and 149. Newer homes and businesses near those exits often need driveways, parking pads and patios, while older blocks near downtown need replacement work.
Near the interstate
The 1959 decision to route Interstate 85 through Jackson County shaped where Commerce grew. Homes and businesses near the north-side exits often need wider driveways, parking pads for work trucks and trailers, and slabs for storage buildings. Those surfaces take heavier loads than a family car, so we size thickness and reinforcement for the vehicles that will actually use them, and we cut control joints at a spacing suited to the slab depth.

Commerce Questions
Can you replace the front steps on my old mill house?
Yes. We remove the old steps, check the footing and the connection to the house, and form new steps with even risers sized to the doorway.
Do tree roots break up sidewalks in Commerce?
They often do on older lots. We can cut back roots where it is safe for the tree, rebuild the base, and add reinforcement. Sometimes rerouting the walk is the better answer.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway?
It depends on where the work is. We check with the city before we schedule, especially if the driveway meets the street or a sidewalk.
